What Is Debater of the Month?

Debater of the Month (DotM) is VersyTalks' flagship monthly text-based competition, celebrating outstanding debaters through community voting and meaningful rewards. It happens in the debate forum, not in the official VersyTalks Debate Tournaments.

Each month, selected debates are marked as eligible for DotM. Contributions to these debates help participants climb the rankings, earn recognition, and win Debate Credits.

The competition combines quality argumentation, strategic thinking, and community engagement, making it one of the highest-profile events on the platform.

How Debater of the Month Works

Here is the month-long DotM flow at a glance:

Join eligible debates: Look for debates marked as DotM-eligible or listed in the Debater of the Month tab. Votes on your arguments, discussion replies, and rebuttals in these debates count toward the competition, along with any onboarding-path steps you complete that month.
Earn votes: Other community members can vote for strong arguments and discussions. A discussion thread becomes eligible for voting after it reaches at least three total replies.
Track your progress: Follow your contributions, votes, and monthly standing through the DotM leaderboard and your dashboard.
Finish in the Top 10: The top 10 eligible debaters each receive 10 Debate Credits. Credits are awarded automatically once the monthly results are final. Ties are broken by argument votes, then rebuttal votes, then by who reached their score first.
Meet the eligibility rules: your account must be at least 30 days old when the month ends, and you need at least 10 contributions in that month's DotM debates.
Spend your Debate Credits: Debate Credits can be redeemed for debate coaching from professional debate coaches in the VersyTalks marketplace.

Rewards and Recognition

Debater of the Month participants can receive several forms of recognition:

Debate Credits: Each Top 10 debater receives 10 Debate Credits. To be eligible, your account must be at least 30 days old when the month ends and you need at least 10 contributions (arguments, discussion replies, rebuttals or feedback) in that month's DotM debates. If someone in the Top 10 isn't eligible, the next eligible debater takes their place.
Argument and Discussion of the Month: The authors of the Argument of the Month and the debaters in the Discussion of the Month each receive 1 Debate Credit.
Debate Coaching: Credits can be used for eligible debate-coaching experiences in the VersyTalks marketplace.
Automatic Delivery: Awarded credits are added directly to your VersyTalks account and shown in your dashboard.
Achievement Badges: Winners can earn exclusive badges displayed on their profiles.
Platform Visibility: Outstanding arguments and debaters may be highlighted in newsletters, social media, and featured content.
Reputation Boost: Strong DotM performance can increase a debater's visibility and credibility throughout the platform.

Using Debate Credits

Debate Credits are the currency used across the VersyTalks Debate Ecosystem, and they give you access to a diverse range of debate-coaching options in the VersyTalks marketplace.

When credits are awarded, they are added to your account automatically and shown in your dashboard. You can browse available coaches, explore different types of debate coaching, and apply your credits to an eligible service that fits your goals.

Debate Credits are used within VersyTalks rather than paid out as cash.

Voting Guidelines

Community members should consider the following when voting:

Argument Quality: The logic, structure, and depth of the reasoning.
Evidence and Citations: The use of credible sources, examples, and supporting data.
Clarity and Persuasiveness: How effectively the contribution communicates and supports its position.
Respectful Tone: Civil and constructive engagement with opposing views.

Revived Debates in DotM

Each month, up to six debates can be revived and re-enter the DotM competition through community votes using revival tokens.

Revived debates appear with a 🧟 zombie icon. Participating debaters can update their arguments during a seven-day window or leave them unchanged.

This gives past arguments another opportunity to compete while allowing debaters to demonstrate growth and improvement.

Strategies to Win Debater of the Month

To maximize your chances:

Participate early in the month: Give your arguments time to gather votes and feedback.
Engage with feedback: Responding to constructive suggestions can improve your argument quality and community perception.
Focus on clarity: Well-organized, easy-to-follow arguments often perform better than dense or overly technical ones.
Support your claims: Use relevant data, examples, and credible sources wherever possible.
Be active in discussions: Respond to challenges and participate thoughtfully in discussion threads to demonstrate consistent engagement.
Stay consistent: Make meaningful contributions throughout the month.

Important Note

VersyTalks Debate Credits cannot be redeemed or converted into cash, and cannot be transferred to another account. Debate Credits won in Debater of the Month expire 6 months after the date they are awarded, so they must be used before that deadline. This expiry helps VersyTalks manage the volume of outstanding reward credits and maintain reliable coaching capacity across the marketplace. Debate Credits purchased directly by users never expire.
