Was Slavery Abolished?
...
The 13th Amendment states: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” That exception matters. Because “crime” is subjective and enforced by the state, forced labor through convict leasing and modern prison work shows slavery was never fully abolished.
