Mental health can affect a person’s ability to work just as physical illness can, but workplaces do not always treat the two in the same way. A mental health day generally refers to taking time away from work to recover from stress, anxiety, burnout, or other forms of psychological strain before they become more serious. Some employers already allow employees to use sick leave for mental health reasons, while others distinguish between physical illness and mental wellbeing. Supporters argue that recognizing mental health days could help prevent burnout and reduce longer-term absence, while critics may question how they should be defined, monitored, or accommodated without creating unfairness or disrupting workplaces. Should mental health days receive the same recognition and protection as sick days?
