Should jail time be removed altogether?

Question

Sentencing people to jail is very resource-heavy, as the state essentially becomes the caretaker of the criminals, even for the worst of them. Besides, people serving life sentences can't really be fixed, can they?

I can't see a world where jailtime is abolished. Freedom is such a basic human need, that, with the threat of removing, creates a certain balance of crime and following the law. The definition of right and wrong are not inherently powerful enough for society to self-regulate and avoid crimes. Therefore, jail remains the strongest answer.

DEVILS ADVOCATE BUT I RAN OUT yes; there are even reports of homeless people wanting to go to jail for food; if anything we should wipe their memories and have them restart their life with the mold we set for them; or we can make them pay for their own stay such as assigning them jobs on a cotton farm; something labor intensive and hand out punishments for those who don't obey the system; make them useful in some way.

I don’t think we should get ride of jail time. I think jail time should be a thing as a consequences, but how ever some inmates don’t get treated fairly and I think our jails need to be reconstructed as in we need to protect inmates from danger of other inmates and we need a better rehabilitation system. Other then that I don’t know what else we would do beside sending someone to jail because some people are stubborn and don’t learn unless they have serious consequences for there actions.
