This feels more like a question of opinion, so I’ll answer it from that perspective. I don’t believe people are simply born “good” or “evil.” A person’s morality is shaped by their actions, choices, and the circumstances that lead them down a certain path. That being said, accountability still matters. If someone commits harmful acts such as murder or theft, there should absolutely be consequences for those actions. However, what feels unjust about many current justice systems is their overwhelming focus on punishment rather than rehabilitation. If we judge someone entirely by their past actions without making any effort to change their future, then we are reducing them to the worst thing they have done. You cannot truly assess someone’s morality without giving them the opportunity, guidance, and support to grow beyond those actions. The United States has more prisoners than any other country in the world. It has one of the highest prisoner per capita rates, as well as one of the highest recidivism rates, in the developed world. The US prison system sucks, and it is because of its goal of retribution. The point of the justice system should be simple: to prevent crime from happening and make the country safer. But that is not what happens in America. Criminals are treated as animals, abused in prisons, and leave the criminal justice system broken. If any progress is to be made in society, we cannot keep this up. We have to rehabilitate all of our prisoners through education programs, mandatory therapy programs, and all necessary measures to make the world safer.
