I do not feel this would be a good idea, as I feel that it operates off of the assumption that this is time people even have to give back. Obviously, public service is crucial and it is an amazing way to give back to your community, but to make it mandatory is the issue. This argument assumes that there will be no help then provided for those who give up their time, e.g. childcare arranged or compensation for lost salaries. I think it's so vital to consider the people who are already struggling, and that they simply cannot afford to take part in such services, good as it might be. Many people have to work almost constantly to make ends meet, picking up multiple jobs just to survive. Arguably, some of these options mean you don't have to devote a lot of time, but it can still be so unrealistic for some, and it can still have drastic impacts on their livelihoods. Public service should be very much encouraged, but to make it mandatory can actually just increase suffering for a select few.

I don't think this should be strictly necessary but I think it should heavily recommended and incentivized. I think a year isn't too much to ask as it could be done intermittently and already people have to do a lot (school, college, work) before they can truly pursue their goals. Having more people do public service would benefit the whole community and give people experience for future work. I think there are some cases where the it should not be mandatory though.

As of now, my entire life revolves around community service and helping others. But I wouldn't force others into the same situation. While it would be good to require the entitled humans to do community service, not everyone is in a position to do so. Especially those who are in poverty, swamped with work, or severely disabled. Unless the world has a way to accommodate those people, mandatory community service won't work for them. Also, what about children? And I don't mean teaching unruly teenagers about respect and empathy, I mean like, young kids, are we really gonna force children to work? Speaking of, what about parents? How would they be able to contribute to community service for a whole year when they have kids to care for?

First of all what is public service? If a person is doing their work and people are using or benefiting from their products then it's a public service and by no means one should be forced to do any work. It's one liberty to capitalise one's help or in general product. Slavery is a felony crime. If you want service from anyone then pay the price or increase the compensation at the time or after the service. Government take too much money and labour as tax and now why can't just pay those people? Nothing is free in the world and slavery is a crime.

I think having it be mandatory would limit personal freedom too much. It would be smart to heavily encourage these things though. You can learn a lot from working with the old, trying to save the environment, and helping the community. Perhaps a system where if you work in these fields and get perks like cheaper Healthcare or college would be smart. This is a fun idea to encourage and build a better world, but making it mandatory is no good.

By rotating people through roles like food distribution, environmental work, or basic community support, it'd build a deeper understanding of how interdependent society actually is and strengthen empathy across different social groups. Besides, for clarification, public service wouldn’t be limited to (heavy) physical labor, but would include a wide range of roles suited to different abilities, skills and personal conditions, from logistical support to healthcare assistance or administrative work. This would ensure that everyone can participate meaningfully, while still sharing the same underlying experience of contributing to the public good.
